Vestry
Adult communicants in good standing are eligible for nomination to serve on the Vestry. This group oversees the business aspects of the church and offers support to the Rector.
John G. McCurdy, Senior Warden
Associate Professor of History at Eastern Michigan University. John was born and grew up in Kansas where his father served as a Chaplain and his mother a United Methodist minister. After receiving his Ph.D. from Washington University in St. Louis, John came to Ypsilanti to teach early American history. His interests include reading, gardening, and baseball.
Although he was raised a Methodist, John became a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in 2006. He was attracted to St. Luke's because of its rich liturgy and diverse congregation. He regularly reads scriptures during Sunday services and has served on the Vestry since 2010.
Dorothy L. Martelle, Junior Warden
Bible numbers are always a challenge, both in their exaggerations and in their mystical use. My preference is the number three for these reasons:
(1) Jesus is my best friend.
(2) I believe God loves and works through people.
(3) Some of God’s most diligent witnesses attend St. Luke’s Episcopal Church.
My history includes 61 years as an Episcopalian and it continues to be an honor to serve God through His church.
I am a widow with 4 adult children, 7 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. I am retired, having worked for 25 years as a School Psychologist in several schools in Washtenaw and Wayne Counties. My hobbies are playing tennis, walking my dog, reading and doing crossword puzzles. Life is good!!!
Martha Kern-Boprie, Treasurer
Member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church since 1960
Served on the vestry several times, including service as Senior Warden, Junior Warden, Clerk and Treasurer. Taught church school frequently since 1976. Served on multiple boards, committees and projects. Chaired parish stewardship campaign several times.
Diocesan service: Stewardship Consultant from 1985 through approximately 2004. First alternate Lay Deputy to 2000 General Convention in Denver CO.
Education: BS and Masters degrees in Political Science and Public Administration
Work Experience: Currently employed as an Accountant with University of Michigan Nephrology Division, monitoring research funds. Served 12 years as Superior Township Treasurer and 10 years as County Commissioner.
I serve on the Vestry to help use the resources God has graced us with, to give life and action to God’s mission for us, right here in Ypsilanti.
